Kannur

Kannur is a very beautiful place situated in the Northern part of Kerala.It is less polluted place with lush greeneries, salubrious climate and rich heritage. The beaches surrounded by bonnie coconut groves and its long rivers act an ornament to this place.

Kannur is very rich with its glorious past, vivid art forms, cultural abundance and ancestry. It is believed that King Solomon's fleet of ships anchored here to collect timber.

Major Tourist Spots in Kannur Kerala

The Main tourist attractions in Kannur are the following

St. Angelo fort

St. Angelo fort is located 2 kms from Kannur Town. This fort was constructed by the Portuguese in AD 1505.It was handed over to Dutch and later the British. The British converted it as an important military center. The fort is a worth to see construction. The view of the sea from the top of the fort is really astonishing. The area is not that inhabited and is hence a very calm and pleasant place.

Arakkal Palace

Arackal was the only Muslim royal family of Kerala.The Arakkal Palace was the residence of this family. Arakkal Palace is located 3 Kms from Kannur.

Ezhimala

It is bonnie, isolated group of hills. 38 km north of Kannur. You will love this place surrounded by sea on its three sides, with deeper blue colored sea and unique textured sand. There is a Naval Academy here and hence is protected by the Navy.

Madayi Mosque

This mosque built with marbles from Arabia is located 22 Kms from Kannur.It was built in 1124 AD.

Thalassery

Thalassery is 21 Kms from Kannur.The Thalassery Fort located here was built in 1683. The Lighthouse, St. Rosario Church, the Collector's bungalow are other things you will find interesting in Thalassery .You can also visit the Brennen Cemetery where many British Administrators rest in peace.

Aralam Wild life Sanctuary

This sanctuary covering an area of 55 Sq Km is located almost 40 Kms from the district head quarters. The area is situated in a tropical evergreen forest area. You can watch a variety of animals and birds here.

Paithalmala

Paithalmala is a hot trekking spot which is about 1372metres above sea level. It is located in the border of Kerala and Karnataka.

Pazhassi Dam and Gardens

The dam and the gardens together form an attractive tourist spot. Boating through the dam is really enthralling. Boats are available for rent here. The children's park and sculptures are also attractive.

Moppila Bay

This bay iis a natural fishing harbour. The famous Dutch fort St.Angelo's fort is very close to this. The rough sea and inland water is separated by a tall sea wall stretching out.

Payyambalam Beach

The beach is just 2kms from the city. The beach is the most important domestic picnic spot.The location is really calm with soothing atmosphere. There is an important cremation ground here. Many famous personalities of the state were cremated here.
