Periyar wildlife sanctuary is one of the top wildlife sanctuaries of the country. The main tourist destination here in Thekkady. It is accessible by road, 5 Kms from Kumily town. Extending over 777 sq Km, Periyar National Park is a pleasure to visit on your Kerala Backwater tour and you are sure to enjoy its rich variety of flora and fauna if you are a wildlife lover.
The Periyar Lake is surrounded by forest with its abundance of vide variety of flora and fauna. Taking a backwater trip you would be really enthralled to see different kinds if animals including bison, elephants, gaurs, langur, Sambar deer, wild boars etc grazing on the bank of the lakes. The Otter can also be sighted.

Mangala Devi Temple |
Mangala Devi Temple is an ancient temple hidden in the dense woods at the top of hills 1337 m above sea level. The temple is a paragon of the traditional Kerala style of architecture. Only on the Chithra Pournami festival day, visitors are permitted here. The peak around renders a panoramic view of the eastern slopes of the Ghats and the hill villages of Tamil Nadu in that direction. The Wildlife warden, Thekkady grants permission to visit the area on request.
