Janardhana Temple
Janardhana Temple, the 2000 years old temple which consists of a Vishnu shrine is located at a distance of 45 km from Thiruvananthapuram city and 37 km from Kollam. History says that the original temple was engulfed and destroyed by tidal waves.
Sivagiri Mutt
Sivagiri Mutt is situated 3 km. east of the Janardhana temple. The ashram is devoted to Sree Narayana Guru (1855-1928), whose ardent followers are the Ezhavas. Sivagiri is the headquarters of the Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana Sangham Trust too.
Anjengo Fort
Varkala also houses the Dutch East India Company's main garrison, Anjengo Fort. he The Fort was a vindication of their powerful position in the state in the 17th and 18th centuries.
Kappil Lake
Kappil Lake is 6kms north of Varkala. The estuary between Edava and Kappil are worth admirable as people travelling past this place by train or buses get a beautiful glimpse of the same. Vettekkada, near Kappil and Varkala is another spectacular beach around the place.
Varkala Tunnel
Divan Sir T Mahadeva Rao of Travancore initiated the construction of the 924 ft long tunnel in 1867. However, it got completed in 1880, at the time of Divan Sheshaya Sasthri. The tunnel has been extensively used for ferrying of several kinds of goods.
Yoga, Ayurveda & Massage
Numerous Centres for yoga and massage are around the place. But most of these centres are seasonal and of varying quality though they provide all services. Resorts announce one-week to one-month programmes. The swamis of the Sivagiri Mutt lead meditation sessions. A nature cure centre is also there near the beach.
